You want a VPN for two things: privacy that holds up and streaming that doesn't break. Most providers talk big and then fall apart the moment Netflix throws an error or your connection drops for two seconds.

NordVPN is one of the few "big brand" VPNs that usually does the job. Not perfectly. But reliably.

Now the details.

Speed and streaming

NordVPN's main advantage is speed consistency. It's not just "fast in a lab", it stays usable when servers are busy.

They push NordLynx, their WireGuard-based protocol. That matters because WireGuard is typically faster and lighter than older options, and NordLynx is their implementation built on top of it.

Streaming is where people care about speed. NordVPN is regularly ranked at the top for Netflix access, and in late 2025 testing Tom's Guide listed NordVPN as their top Netflix VPN, citing speeds up to 1,256 Mbps in their testing and strong unblocking.

Reality check: streaming services fight back. Sometimes you still need to switch servers. That's normal. The difference is that with NordVPN you're usually switching once, not playing whack-a-mole for 20 minutes.

Privacy and "no-logs"

NordVPN claims a no-logs policy. The only reason that claim has weight is that it has been checked repeatedly by third parties, including a fifth assurance engagement involving Deloitte, with access during Nov 18 to Dec 20, 2024, looking at privacy-relevant systems and configurations.

That's better than "trust us bro." It's still not a lifetime guarantee. Audits are point-in-time. But it's a real signal that NordVPN is playing in the grown-up category.

Also, NordVPN's corporate story includes a real incident, not just PR. In 2018, a rented server in Finland was accessed through an insecure remote management system left by the data center provider. NordVPN says it found out in April 2019 and removed the server the same day.

If you care about trust, that history matters. Not because it proves they're bad, but because it forces you to ask: how did they react? Since then, NordVPN has leaned hard into audits and infrastructure controls.

Server network and coverage

This is messy because the numbers move, and even NordVPN's own pages don't always match.

Their public "servers" page says 8,926 servers covering 129 countries.

Their support article says 8,400+ servers in 167+ countries.

This is exactly why you should assume VPN stats change constantly. The practical takeaway is simple: the network is large, and you usually have enough nearby servers to keep speed decent.

They also use virtual locations. NordVPN stated they added almost 30 new virtual locations in December 2025, bringing virtual locations to 79, and the total location count to around 178 according to Tom's Guide coverage of the announcement.

Virtual locations are not automatically bad. They're just not what most people assume. If you need a server physically in a country for compliance, verify that detail before you rely on it.

Renewal pricing and plan structure

NordVPN is famous for great intro deals and less friendly renewals. That's not a secret, it's the business model. You can use it to your advantage by buying a longer deal, then setting a reminder to reassess before renewal.

If you hate subscriptions that quietly jump, you need to be disciplined. Put the renewal date in your calendar the moment you pay.

Feature bloat

NordVPN bundles extras. Password manager, storage, add-ons. You can ignore them, but they clutter the experience a bit. If you want a minimalist VPN, this might irritate you.
